The former USM faculty member has still not awoken from the dream of working at a tier 1 university. This week’s events have left the new faculty member feeling dazed:

1) The professor received his travel money allotment for the 2004-2005 year. It about twice as much as he received during the entire last five years at USM.

2) The professor, who is not coming up for tenure for several more years, has already had two meetings last week regarding the tenure process at his school, one with his department head and one with an associate dean. (At USM he had a total of one meeting with his department head before tenure.)

3) The professor went to the meeting of the local AAUP chapter. It was in a small room, and there were less people there than at the average USM meeting. Most of the members were older faculty, including many retired ones. When things are okay, AAUP membership declines.

4) On Friday afternoon, the prof was having a beer with his new colleagues. The conversation turned toward novels that are satires of academia. None of the fictional works described could top USM’s nonfiction.

5) The prof attended a lunch for new faculty at which he met the provost and several administrators. The president, who has spent the bulk of his career at this university, spoke, making good humored remarks about how faculty are important and he’s only a bureaucrat. He also listed the reasons he stayed at this institution:

That the people here are high-powered, but not engaged in political battles and generally get along.

The town has a terrific cultural and artistic life. (He didn’t say anything about economic development.)

Finally, the president has stayed because the university has a strong tradition of shared governance. “No major decision is made without extensive faculty input and input from elected representatives of the staff and students,” he said. No one else at the luncheon looked at all surprised. The prof. almost choked on his salad.

USM is qualitatively different, that's for sure. And so long as it is qualitatively different it will remain quantitatively different, that's for sure.

Good to hear your news, Lost in Tiernation. But just think of all the FUN you could be having here attending PUC meeting and Faculty Senate meetings to discuss the mangement mistake of the week. Last week it was the AA/EEO and this week it is Dr. K. Malone invading a class on the coast. Tha atmosphere is great for scholarly work, about the same as BAGHDAD. Glad to hear that you are eating salads, and I hope you have a Payne Center available.

Ray

You know, maybe this vision of the way other universities "do it right" is just one of the reasons that the IHL board should have NEVER HIRED A PRESIDENT WHO HAS NO SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCE ANYWHERE BUT AT USM.

You know, ram, you could have left the word "SIGNIFICANT" out of your statement & it would still be true.

But I'll turn your statement on its head: This vision of the way other universities "do it right" is exactly the reason that the IHL board hired a president who has no experience anywhere but at USM. The IHL board was explicitly looking for a person who would have no qualms about attacking shared governance & tenure. The were also looking for someone who they perceived could maximally damage the institution in the minimum amount of time.

Remember, they didn't just hire a guy with limited experience, they hired a guy with a track record of bad management practices.

Your IHL must be something to behold.

Where are the USM alumni in all of this? Surely the organized alumni, as represented through the USM alumni organization. are not so weak, unaware, or uncaring as to be ineffective in protesting the damage and embarrassment inflicted on their alma mater.

The alumni fall into 2 groups: (1) those who are going to keep quiet as long as the football team is winning, and (2) those who wannabe alumni officers & therefore aren't going to ruffle any administrative feathers.

Well, there is a 3rd group & it's the largest: those who just don't care. As a rule, they went to USM because it was cheap and/or would admit them & they are plenty glad to be done with it.

IS THAT ALL THERE IS? - 2ND VERSE (Peggy Lee):

SPOKEN:
And when I was 12 years old, my father took me to the circus, the greatest show on earth.
There were clowns and elephants and dancing bears
And a beautiful lady in pink tights flew high above our heads.
And as I sat there watching the marvelous spectacle
I had the feeling that something was missing.
I don't know what, but when it was over,
I said to myself, "Is that all there is to a circus?"

SUNG:
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is
