Wow, Just when one thought the gnome powerplays were history, new rumblings coming out of the Polymer Palace. Just this week, the chair over there (shelboo's mini-me) and one of his senile senior faculty (Payne Center boys room rumor monger), have been sounding off about how the gnome has arranged for Dr. Gandy to be taken down and dismissed as Dean. They're pinning the blame on Rex for the serious issues they have with the NSF and the fact that they can't get anyone other than Alums to interview for the many faculty openings they have (five or six open lines).
Obviously some think that life under Saunders will still be good ole boy plantation living. If we get another interim Dean in the near future, it will be a clear sign that times haven't changed.
from things i've been hearing for awhile i speculate that polymer science may be on the verge of imploding. years of hyper-competition among faculty and graduate students leads to a toxic department atmosphere. a former chair was denied tenure, and a relatively long-term department member is taking his lab to virginia tech. the counseling center has a number of their graduate students over there seeking help.
as to gandy, he has been interviewing extensively for months. he also applied for USM's presidency. his recent interviewing may be in anticipation of shelby's return to polymer science.

Let me just second (third?) what everyone has said about problems in the Polymer Palace. It's always been an accident waiting to happen...and it's sad, too, given the great staff and wonderful grad students that Polymer attracts. Too bad that the egos of a few will bring down that department.
A small correction to Stinky Cheese Man's post - the past Chair was terminated without being allowed to submit a tenure document. I hear this was accomplished without a faculty vote in the department and that the current chair is now claiming that this was all Rex's doing, part of the Dean's attempt to undermine Polymer Science to make himself and Physics look better.
