In the last few days, official looking e-mails have been sent out to the campus community requesting that the user open an attachment to verify a file. This is not an official e-mail and is a hoax. The addresses being used include but are not limited to administrator@usm.edu, support@usm.edu and registrar@usm.edu. The attachments are generally .zip files which contain viruses. The attachments and message should be deleted immediately. The body of the message will state something similar to the following:
Your account has been used to send a huge amount of unsolicited spam messages during the recent week. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and confirm the attached document so that you will not run into any future problems with the online service. If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to cancel your membership. Virtually yours, The USM Support Team.
I'm sure I'm going to sound like a schoolmarm here, but I would hope that were it the university--rather than some low-lifes--sending out such a message that the usage would be corrected from the fingernails-on-chalkboard phrase "great amount of unsolicited messages" to "great numberof unsolicited messages." Using the word 'amount' for items that can be quantified is still not standard practice and therefore would be inappropriate for a university communication.
