I heard some "unofficial" info about Dr. Saunders and the Faculty Senate (F.S.) meeting.
1) She wasn't at the F.S.meeting for long. She offered to come (and bring her provost) to all senate meetings if they wante to give a brief update or to talk about any issues F.S. had.
2) Before coming to the senate, she went by the library to meet the library staff and faculty - she mentioned that visit at the senate meeting and stated that she would get the search for the new library director underway immediately.
3) She was specifically asked about a search for a new provost and she stated that the search for the 3 deans would commence probably by the end of the summer semester and that she hoped to have at least an interim administrative team on board by then.
4) She was asked if she would be replacing existing deans. She obviously hadn't thought about that yet and stated such.
5) She mentioned that the tenure stuff (at the dept. levels) in some colleges was unsatisfactory and that she was working with deans already to institute better criteria for promotion and tenure.
6) She spoke a little about the FAR and stated that it needed to be overhauled or done away with. [Please see Dave Beckett's correction of this item below. --mod]
7) She is going to attend the F.S. retreat in August.
Reporter, Per point #3, does this mean that she has decided to search for a new provost? Also, which three dean positions will there be searches for? Will it be the three interim folks? BAD

Sorry, Bad, I can't answer your question. I'm just relaying info exactly as I hear it. I assume the dean positions are the three open positions filled by interims.

The 3 positions mentioned are the interim positions. She plans to do national searches, but will welcome USM faculty applications. Barry Piazza
Thanks for the promotion, but I commented on the FAR (explain its purpose or get rid of it!) rather than the university's new president. The remainder of your report was pretty accurate. Keep up the reporting!
