"Saunders clearly believes in the power of showing up - and at every appearance, she has emphasized a message of optimism.
"We need a hopeful outlook," she said. "We want people to have a lot of trust in this place, and I'm not sure that's universal right now."
Saunders took office May 21 after the turbulent five-year Shelby Thames administration, which left many faculty and staff suspicious of administrators and anxious for more say in the university's governance. A public relations expert whose doctoral degree is in communications theory, Saunders' first handful of public statements as president seem designed to soothe fears, get skeptics on board and encourage energy, enthusiasm and accountability.
Good communication, she said, is one of the "most ornery" aspects of running a university."We are a complex organization - it's not like we come in when the whistle blows and all have lunch at the mess hall together," ...It's very unnerving for folks when they pick up a newspaper and read about a decision that's been made that they didn't know anything about."
