1)AA/EEO: At the PC meeting on Wednesday it was pointed out strongly by Myron Henry, Tammy Greer and others that AA/EEO should be maintained as a separate, stand-alone office. In fact, no member of the PC spoke in favor of moving it to a part time position under Human Resources. Later (that day or Thursday?) SFT had his usual meeting with the Faculty Senate executive officers. AA/EEO was discussed again at that meeting and at some point SFT asked for the full Faculty Senate’s opinion concerning the AA/EEO. At today’s Faculty Senate meeting this was discussed in depth and a vote was taken. The result was 35 for and 2 against maintaining a separate, stand-alone office.
2) Post Tenure Review: Dr. Grimes attended the FS meeting today and answered questions concerning Post Tenure Review. From the evidence, apparently this past summer the IHL Board asked for data on post tenure review and gave a very short deadline. The senate was given paperwork that shows the Board has a policy that each August this data is to be reported to the Board, but apparently USM didn’t have it’s procedure disseminated to faculty and deans (it isn’t in the Faculty handbook) and USM’s procedure was NOT followed. (Two years with negative (unsatisfactory) OVERALL rating triggers a post tenure review). The paper work shown indicates that Tim Hudson asked each dean for the number of faculty rated unsatisfactory in any category for the 2003 annual evaluation. These numbers were then sent to the board. If it were done correctly the best guess is that there would have been ZERO faculty rated “unsatisfactory overall” for two consecutive years.
We didn't give a detailed report on the PC this month because it was covered very well by the HA and the above developments were still ongoing.

I have no way of knowing, but the sense of the senate was for BW to stay on the job. Why Not?
It will be interesting to see if SFT fires BW after the article in todays HA. Of course, she may decide to leave after seeing how this administration functions, and the how much consideration it gives to peoples lives if they think they can save a few bucks.
Remember the No Confidence vote addressing SFT as Prez. A lot of good that did. I support the Faculty Senate absolutely and want them to continue to address tenuous issues. However, just because the FS wants Becky's position reinstated - will SFT really listen to them and act upon it?

Emma, I was assuming the HA was quoting SFT after the vote when it stated:
"President Shelby Thames will retain a full-time office of affirmative action/equal employment opportunity compliance at the University of Southern Mississippi after the Faculty Senate voted 35-2 Friday in favor of keeping the position.
"That's fine with me," Thames said. ... "
From this quote I assumed he meant the position stays. Whether Becky stays is another question. I agree with your post that addressed this and wished her well.

"Shelby Thames will use his President's Update letter to explain why a report to state officials listed 20 University of Southern Mississippi professors as rating unsatisfactory in post-tenure reviews. ... Math professor Myron Henry asked Thames at Wednesday's President's Council meeting to disavow the process that resulted in the report from former provost Tim Hudson to the Institutions of Higher Learning. Thames agreed to do so in the update, which he writes to faculty, staff and students every week or 10 days. A link to the letter is posted on the homepage of the Southern Miss Web site..."
Last update was October 1 - today is October 16. Will there be a President's Update Letter addressing this and other issues (as agreed and reported in HA the article above) prior to the IHL Board Meeting?
