"... Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith took time to praise Thames for his work as USM president and as the founder of the schools nationally recognized polymer science program.

During his tenure as president, research dollars at Southern Miss doubled from $50 million to $102 million this year, Meredith noted. He commended Thames for 43 years of service to USM and Mississippi.

Meredith, the College Board and a roomful of other higher education leaders at the Universities Center saluted Thames with a standing ovation.

Its been an honor," Thames responded. Im not retiring. Im just changing jobs. This is a great state and Im proud to be part of it."
