Many of us are very interested in what has happened to the faculty and staff who have left over the last 3 to 5 years. It would be fun to post information we have about these talented folks.
Marian Wilson Kimber has earned tenure in the School of Music at the University of Iowa. This is one of the most respected universities in the country for its programs in music. Congratulations to Marian.
Many of you may remember Marian's "economic development" project during the spring of 2004.
P. Toby Graham is doing well as the Director of the Digital Library of Georgia. (he is at the University of Georgia) He was the former head of Special Collections of University Libraries here at USM and was largely responsible for many endeavors to digitize library materials while that was still a new idea for many. Below is a cut/paste regarding a new endeavor by Toby - he is a shining star that left all too quickly, unfortunately...
Athens, Ga. P. Toby Graham, director of the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG), has been selected to attend the Frye Leadership Institute at Emory University and plans to use the experience to help the University System of Georgia create a digital repository for electronic scholarship.
Its heartening to see such valued and talented former colleagues doing so well.
Here's an update on some of the folks who have moved on from the history department in the SFT era.
Chuck Bolton, former chair of the history department, moved to a similar position at UNC-Greensboro where he is building up their PhD program. The Bolton's are enjoying living in North Carolina and pulling for Tar Heel basketball.
Brad Bond is dean of the graduate school at Northern Illinois.
Elizabeth Drummond is teaching at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and living near the beach.
Haley Froysland is at Indiana University--South Bend, which puts her closer to family
Jim Hollingsworth took early retirement (but not from scholarship) after he was forced out of the history department by Dvorak. He and his wife live in Jackson.
Geoff Jensen holds an endowed chair at the Virginia Military Institute.
Neil McMillen also took early retirement rather than work under the SFT regime.

Anyway, I looked back over the lists posted over the years. The number and quality of departures are truly amazing.
How many have left the English Department? Here is a partial list from my memory:
Gary Stringer Noel Polk Anne Wallace William Kuskin David Wheeler D. C. Berry Kim Herzinger Mary Villeponteaux Susan Malone Jeannie Gillespie
I know I'm missing names...does anyone have updates on these folks and others?
My bad to leave out Tom Richardson...he went to Wm Carey, right? And, I got Jeannie Gillespie mixed up with another Jeannie...the one who used to run the Writing Program...I think she ended up at JCJC. What was her last name?

The historian exodus listed above doesn't include the 3-4 faculty who have left this year. Percentage-wise, History may have had the highest losses of any department at USM at approximately 50% of the tenured/tenure track faculty as it stood in 2003. Much of this has been at the tenured full and associate rank, as opposed to the normal circulation of assistant professors.
Can someone with a better sense of the losses across the univeristy verify this statement?
Hello ,Truth, You mean Jeannie Ezell--I hear she is doing well. I am still here--but I was on sabbatical this semester. I will be back in the office this week. Greetings from my gang to yours! Jeanne (Gillespie)
I just saw the good wishes! Thanks very much. It is nice to be remembered.
I still think about USM often, and how everything that happened there completely changed my life. I think it is important to say that in addition to getting tenure this year, I've been elected to the Iowa faculty senate. I'm also on the executive committee for the AAUP chapter here and an officer for the state chapter. In fact, I've just accepted the position of "Glamser-Stringer AAUP Membership Recruitment Coordinator" at Iowa. Okay, it's not really called "Glamser-Stringer," but I think of it that way. Even when things are good, there is work to be done, and because of USM I'm going to keep doing it. (Hmmm, maybe I should offer a free AAUP t-shirt when you join our chapter . . . .)
I still haven't had the ceremonial removal of the "Impeach Thames" bumper sticker off my car--I vowed it would stay on until he's gone. When is Dr. Saunders in office? Michael and I might open a bottle of champagne.
We wish everyone the very best for a peaceful and productive transition.

It is 3:40 pm CDT. The Thames Timer says he has 6 days, 9 hours and a few minutes left, (not that I keep track of that).
I think the timer is off a day. I think his term officially ends at midnight Saturday, as the IHL statement says "until May 20" not "through May 20" -- however, he and Mrs. Thames have moved out of the house on Jamestown and a lot of work is being done on the house (I pass there almost every day). We do know for sure that Dr. Saunders plans to be at work on Monday morning, May 21.
EDIT: Aha! Info has kindly posted the relevant data on the Thames Timer thread. This probably has no practical effect, but the IHL minutes do say UNTIL May 20.

Hi, Jeannie! Thanks for setting me straight...can't believe I mixed you guys up! I knew who I was talking about, though....
Glad to hear that things are good with your clan...things are good with mine, too. End of school year and all that for us...my oldest will be starting HS in the fall...hard to imagine!
Take good care and I've got my fingers crossed for USM post-May 20!
