"I want to be her biggest fan no matter what her background is but what goes on in a Division III university and what goes on in a Division I university are worlds apart," said Fred Drews, a member of the University of Southern Mississippi Foundation board." ... "I believe Southern Miss' opportunity to become a world class university is now," Drews said. "If we don't play on our strengths and boost our image, we could lose that. I know I sound negative but I'm not. I just think there are going to be challenges, and she better be ready to put on her Nikes and start running." ... But Bobby Chain, a former mayor and college board member and active Southern Miss contributor, said he believes Saunders is the best choice among the people he knew applied. ... He said he believes a president like Saunders will help mend wounds caused during Thames' administration."I think it will be instantaneous healing with her and it won't be too early. There is a lot of healing that needs to be done," Chain said.
It's curious that the statement regarding athletics is coming from a foundation board member. I thought the foundation was the fundraising arm for academics and for the university. That's why there is a separate athletic foundation board.
Wisconsin-Whitewater has a much more extensive athletic program than USM, including swimming, wrestling, and men's soccer. Dr. Saunders will have a broader view of athletics than many USM presidents. Having been a student at Georgia and Florida State, she won't be overwhelmed by the USM sports scene.
I was very encouraged by Bo Morgan's remarks. I went to graduate school with Bo about a hundred years ago, and would think that anyone he recommended would be a quality person.
