This is a university. A university's main purpose is to educate the students.
I agree academics is number one, even ahead of "funding the business". But let's hope she's a strong supporter of athletics. Remember she still has the on-campus interviews and will have to answer questions on this topic. I would like to see her receive the support of those who are only interested in supporting USM's athletics.
Anyone who went to Hattiesburg High and graduated from USM will understand how important sports are in this region. Dr. Lucas is a good example of this. Academics and athletics are not mutually exclusive in the American system of higher education. Check out the academic reputation of the schools in the ACC and the Big Ten.
It's interesting that some boosters see Thames as such a good thing for USM sports. If you look at the overall performance of USM teams over his administration, there was no improvement and an argument could be made for decline. The most charitable thing you can say is he didn't hurt sports very much.
Another point I'd like to make is that the faculty was very supportive of the athletic program under Dr. Lucas.
From the UWW website, here is a slideshow and in one pic she's obviously at a ball game. Another seems to show all those kids (are all seven children hers, or is it a blended family?)
