After Ivan has gone, and folks get power, please check in. Those of us who are far away will worry if we don't hear from you in the next couple of days (even the ones of you that we argue with!). If it is very bad, and large numbers of folks are without power, will those of you who have it, please report on the situation?

Couple of hours ago the eye made land along Mobile Bay. At 6:23 a.m. the eye of the storm is currently northeast of Mobile. Currently getting a lot of rain (1-3 inches) winds form the north at (wind gusts up to 41MPH). NBC affiliate WDAM appears to be off the air, but CBS affiliate channel 22 (with it's Jackson station 12) and WLOX in Gulfport/Biloxi are reporting 24-7. IVAN appears to be headed up Alabama.

What's with DAM? Last night, Jim Cameron, general manager, talked about their two power lines and back-up generator, promised to be on-the-air all night. They went down during Leno and I switched to the Weather Channel. This morning, DAM was still off air. I never lost power here in the 'Burg. Looks like Cameron jinxed them.
Hey Foot Soldier - Thanks for posting this thread. Although WDAM lost power (apparently), I think most places did not. We got a lot of heavy rain and wind, and in fact it's still quite windy out with more rain predicted throughout the day. I haven't driven around so can't give a more complete report but as others check in, we may get a better overall picture.
I dozed on my couch with the Weather Channel on until the wee hours of the morning...in solidarity with my friends and family in South Mississippi. So glad to hear that MS Gulf Coast was spared, but sad for the families in AL and FL who have lost loved ones and property. Also, I hear that middle TN might be getting the remnants of Ivan over the weekend (wind and lots of rain!). I'll keep y'all posted!
I just came in on the end of WDAM's noon show. . . Did they announce that faculty and staff are to report to work tomorrow? I'd check my email, but the USM mail server seems to be down (again)
Truth, it looks like you can quit worrying about us and we can start worrying about you. My area in SW H'burg is in good shape, didn't even get the carport wet, but a friend tells me some power is out in Jones County. Only one in my household sought higher ground -- one of the cats spent the night on top of the fridge due to a visiting dog! I do hope we hear from Invictus soon.
WDAM did not say for us to report to work (that I heard). We were told to stay away until Monday morning. In fact, if we go on campus, we must notify campus security. We dodged a big one on this storm. Lost power for about 10 min near 2:00 AM. All is well this morning. It was pretty heavy about 5:00 AM.
You're right COSTemployee. I called WDAM to make sure, and they said they had not heard from USM -- it was a local K12 school they were talking about (I had just heard the tail end of the announcement). So, enjoy another day off!
After 22 hours without power out here on the rural EPA, the air conditioner is back to running. No damage to any of our stuff or my neighbors', which means that the day was spent cleaning up small limbs, visiting, sharing generators & in general enjoying living in a neighborhood. But since the power is back on, there is no need for me to invite everybody over for a "my goodness what am I going to do with 50 lb of shrimp" party this time. Sorry...
However, I regret to notify everyone that there will probably not be a Nom d'Aplomb award this week, as Miss I is still at the church. The Ladies Missionary Society opened up a shelter for some folks from a nursing home in Escatawpa. Tomorrow, they are organizing relief for the people in Lower Alabama. She seems tireless at times like this, but I suspect by Saturday, she'll be pretty pooped.
I'll keep my fingers crossed & if Miss I feels up to hosting the Saturday night ad hoc committee meeting, I'll let everyone know.
