..."You've got to step on some cheeks to get things done," Thames said. "If (the new president) isn't stepping on some cheeks and making people uncomfortable, something is wrong."...
...Brad Brian, a vice president with Coca-Cola's Mississippi division, agreed that Thames has had a positive influence on the area's economy.
"There are so many ways he has been an asset," Brian said. "He was able to take an academic environment and turn it into something practical for business."...

That says it all. Shelby's boosters have no clue as to how damning such a remark is. Nor do they know how deep a pit he has dug for us.
If the new president is a classless piece of breathing meat, such as someone else, he/she will definitely step on cheeks. Lord, may May 20th come fast. Shelby Freland Thames does not belong on campus, let alone in the president's office!
He turned an academic environment into a business? It's that why most of the finest professors have left?
The comment about stepping on cheeks have me worried. The brave souls who stayed behind, deserve a GREAT president, but, already this incompetent, classless breather, makes comments such as this .. does he know something?
Y'all deserve a good person, but I am not holding my breath. I pray I am wrong.

That comment about "stepping on cheeks" caught my eye also. I thought the saying was "stepping on toes". How do you step on "cheeks"? Whether it be your "front cheeks" or "back cheeks", the only way I can imagine you can step on cheeks is after you knock the person down. What a marvelous way to manage!

Is that a euphemism for kicking butt? If so, that's not very good advice for a university president to give or receive. What a classy guy.

If it's a euphemism, it's unique to the speaker. Google reveals no entries for any of the following:
step on some cheeks step on cheeks step on a few cheeks step on a couple of cheeks
Love the way the Coke guy told it like it is. Love it when people just say it right out. They want a vocational school. Wonder where Coke guy's kids go to school?

Imagine what educated professional parents with a bright high school child who are looking to select a state college would think about this. I'd guess that USM's stock just crashed. State and Ole Miss went up. The IHL couldn't have hoped for more, and the alumni sat idly by.

My interpretation of the Coca Cola's mans statement was more generous, and probably stupid. I took it to mean they expect Thames' "Innovation and Commercialization Park" to bring big business to H'burg. All of those patents from "Plastic Research" will pay off with new companies and royalties. They dream of the equivalent of a scientific Toyota plant for H'burg. We'll have to wait and see, but it seems to me Shelby has preached these "pie-in-the-sky projects since the '60s to get pork, but nothing has come of the projects after the money was gone.
I remember VIVIDLY when a certain breather was appointed president that he said in a TV interview with Denise (strange last name, Hrvlac, or something like that): I KNOW MS politics and I KNOW how to play the game." Oviously in reference to Fleming who had the guts to stand up to the likes of nicholson and klumb (please note, no capitalization).
Was wondering the other day .. do the faculty, staff and students have the power to have his name removed from that building? I have always believed it is a fool who allows to be "honored" while alive and only fools who suggest something like that.
And we have will all have to listen to the honors that the [deleted by moderator] will receive, from TM, Trent, Thad, Haley, the ADP, the Coke folks, the car dealers, less than 5% of the faculty, and the athletic supporters. Maybe we can rename Highway 49 "The Shellbo Parkway".
But it will soon be over.
Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!
Posted on a Sunday....and I didn't even go to church.

Denise Hrdlica, she is down in Mobile now. Not that it has anything to to with your point, which is a good one about his so-called political skills.
As for the building name, I could be wrong, but it is my understanding that after his quintuple bypass, the polymer guys thought he was going to kick the bucket any day and went ahead and named the building so he could see it. I guess they jumped the gun.
The only reason they can claim an increase in honors students is because they lowered the standards/requirements (i.e. no Colloquium anymore). Those of you who went through the REAL Honors College at USM know what I'm talking about.
Shelboo...what a joke. I can't imagine ANY real, wurl' class president/chancellor making those statements.
