Council may donate land for USM
Letter of intent to buy 187 acres OK'd
By MELISSA SCALLAN

GULFPORT - The state College Board could get land for an additional university campus for free if it chooses to build that campus in Gulfport.

The City Council voted 6-1 on Tuesday night to sign a letter of intent to buy 187 acres on South Swan Road east of U.S. 49 if the state College Board agrees to put a University of Southern Mississippi campus there.

If board members choose this property, the city would donate it to the Institutions of Higher Learning....

...Former Gulfport Councilman Billy Hewes is the real estate agent overseeing the property...

...Meredith said recently the board could vote on a piece of property at its meeting in Jackson next week.

Real Estate Agent Billy Hewes, an avid SFT supporter, is waiving any real estate commission that he may be entitled to if the the 10 million dollar deal goes through.

How far is it, as the crow flies, between the:

--the proposed new Gulfport site on South Swan Road in Gulfport and USM in Hattiesburg?

--the proposed new site and the USM campus in Long Beach?

How far is the site from I-10?  From US 49?

The board staff has certainly looked at all of these points. A ten million dollar piece of property would be hard to turn down.

Meredith appeared for about 10 minutes last weekend on WLOX's evening interview show with Dave Elliott. He mentioned then that the IHL was still looking for land and, he said with a smile, would like it to be free.

Thanks to Dave Elliot at WLOX. (and to Lotetta) I did not get to see his piece with TM.

The selection of a new piece of property on the Gulf Coast for higher educational purposes for the IHL has been discussed for a number of years. It was initially reported that it was at the Woolmarket Exit with property owned by a state senator (TG).

Is this the same property? Does the exit at Woolmarket intercect with Swan Road? Probably not.

The location of the property is not as important as what will be done with it. Will it become a Universities Center...for All?

South Swan Road crosses Hwy 49 just before one reaches the Commercial zone north of I10.
